Highlights Of Former Finance Minister P Chidamabaram’s Speech At Congress’s Jan Vedna Sammelan

Congress’s daylong convention on the challenges post-demonetisation, called Jan vedna Sammelan, began Wednesday. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi presided over the convention while party president Sonia Gandhi stayed away.

In the past, Rahul had presided over the party’s foundation day function in December and also chaired a meeting of the party’s Working Committee in the absence of Sonia.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also present at the event along with senior Congress leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Mallikarjun Kharge. The convention is scheduled to continue till 4 pm at New Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi tore into PM Narendra Modi and his government on Wednesday slamming the demonetisation move at the Jan Vedna Sammelan organised by Congress. Mocking the BJP for its promise on “acche din”, Rahul said “Acche din will only come when Congress party comes back to power, in 2019.”

“Except our Finance Minister no one in the world says GDP will not be hit. GDP will be hit by more than 1%. Even 2%. It means 1.5 lakh crore loss to the country. We are going to pay a price for the monumental folly of one person of this country,” says Chidambaram.

“It is my right to decide whether to use cash or cards or cheque. My right as a citizen. I decide for myself. In Germany, Austria, 80% of transactions are in cash. Australia – 60%, France – 52%, US – 46% in cash,” says former finance minister P Chidambaram.

“When PM Modi talks of cashless society he talks of something that never happened anywhere. It’s my choice to use cash or card,” says Chidambaram.
